The idea of “soulless humans” appears in mythology, spiritual traditions and modern awakening circles. It describes people who seem to live entirely on autopilot, without empathy, inner depth or self-awareness. This guide explains what the term means, the signs people describe, where the idea comes from and how to relate to it wisely, without judging or harming anyone.
“Soulless” means lacking warmth, depth or a sense of inner life. In everyday English it describes something mechanical or cold, like a soulless building. In spiritual language, a soulless human is someone who appears to act only from programming, habit and ego, with no visible connection to conscience or a higher self.
Different traditions use different names: “organic portals” in some Gnostic-inspired and esoteric teachings, “NPCs” (non-player characters) in modern internet and simulation-theory language, “hollow” or “empty” people in poetry, and in folklore beings such as golems, zombies or changelings. In psychology there is no such category; traits that look “soulless” are usually discussed as low empathy, emotional detachment or burnout.
People who use the term usually describe: no curiosity about life’s deeper questions; repeating opinions without reflection; little empathy or remorse; reacting rather than responding; a feeling of emptiness in their presence; draining conversations; and a strong dependence on approval, routine and external stimulation.
Commonly cited traits are emotional flatness, predictability, imitation instead of original thought, indifference to beauty, nature and art, a purely material view of success, and resistance to anything that questions “the system”. Keep in mind that trauma, depression and exhaustion can produce the same signs in deeply soulful people, so these traits describe a state, not a fixed identity.
Many cultures tell stories of bodies without souls: the Jewish golem animated by words, the Haitian zombie, European changelings left in place of human children, Norse draugr, and the hollow servants of Gnostic archons who keep humanity asleep inside the “matrix” of the material world. These myths all express the same fear: living without inner awareness.
In awakening teachings, the theme is less about labeling others and more about a mirror. Everyone has “soulless” moments when they live in automatic mode. Spiritual awakening is the process of noticing that autopilot and reconnecting with presence, conscience and the higher self. Read more in our complete spiritual awakening guide.

Do not try to convince or “wake up” anyone by force. Set clear boundaries, keep conversations short and neutral when they drain you, avoid emotional arguments, and choose kindness without self-sacrifice. Spend more time with people and places that nourish you, and remember that anyone can change when they are ready.
Ground yourself daily with meditation, breathwork or time in nature. Notice how you feel after each interaction and adjust your exposure. Journal to separate your emotions from someone else’s. Sleep well, eat simply and limit noise from screens. A strong inner center is the best protection.
It is a spiritual and mythological concept, not a scientific one. It describes a state of disconnection that any person can experience, rather than a proven type of human being.
Lack of empathy and curiosity, repeating ideas without reflection, emotional flatness and leaving others feeling drained are the signs most often described.
Common names include organic portals, NPCs, hollow people, and in folklore golems, zombies or changelings.
Set boundaries, avoid trying to change them, keep interactions calm and short, and focus on protecting your own energy.
